Manchester Museums and Art Galleries
Manchester has a lot to offer in terms of museums and art galleries, so whether you live in Manchester or just visiting there is always something new to see and discover.
The Imperial War Museum North hosts a permanent exhibition on modern conflicts that is arranged in chronological order. Artefacts include an ex-Iraqi army tank and the first gun that was fired by the British in World War I. At intervals the walls of the exhibition transform into visual screens showing photographs and are accompanied by music, sounds and voices. This is called the Big Picture Show. There are also other changing exhibitions that are shown for limited periods of time.
The People’s History Museum presents democracy in Britain through the years and depicts the lives of the ordinary people. The Manchester Museum is part of Manchester University and has a more diverse approach with artefacts from every continent in the world. Manchester also has the Museum of Science and Industry on offer.
Visit The Lowry which is a combined attraction of a theatre and a gallery. It is home to 350 paintings by the artist L S Lowry. The Whitworth Gallery is part of Manchester University and displays both modern and historic artwork.
